Spring is almost here!

466630131Spring is almost here! The days are gradually getting longer, and the temperature is slowly getting warmer. As winter fades and the sunlight begins to increasingly stream through our windows, we feel the desire to freshen up our living areas. Although we love dark, warm colors in the winter, when the weather begins to warm, our spirits lift and we’re ready for lighter, brighter colors and casual fabrics.

It’s easy to bring spring style into your home with just a few simple changes. At Connell’s Furniture & Mattresses in Newark and Mt. Vernon, we’re ready to guide you through the enjoyable process.

The key is to simplify. Remove excess clutter and accessories from shelves and counter tops. Open up your floor plan by taking that seldom used chair and putting it in the basement for the spring.

Substitute dark, heavy accessories, such as mahogany photo frames or brass clocks with accents in lighter woods or finishes. Pewter and silver surfaces are trendy and versatile.

Update that dark, traditional lamp by giving it a new look with a light linen shade. Or better yet, go for a totally new lamp with a natural wood base.

Switch out those brocade accent pillows with fresh pillows in an airy cotton fabric in an open floral or seersucker stripe.

If it’s time for a new sofa or accent tables, look for simple frames with light or white wood trim. Avoid fabric with extensive tailoring or accent fringe.

Just a few simple changes will create a relaxed, casual mood and evoke that vacation mindset we all love. At Connell’s Furniture & Mattresses we have a wide variety of fabrics and finishes to craft your spring home.

Plus, right now trade in your old furniture for brand new furniture during Connell’s trade-in sale! All usable furniture will be donated to local charity furniture banks and you’ll get BIG dollars for your trade-in, plus interest free financing for one full year. You won’t find a better time to get rid of your dark, wintery-styled furniture to make room for some of spring’s hottest styles!

How to Find Your Style

Category:

You’ve made the big decision to redecorate and really want to get it right. That’s the good news. You’ve looked at all the glossy interior design magazines and love everything.  That’s the bad news. All the pages in the magazine look so great; you’re not sure which style is your favorite.

How can you redecorate if you don’t know your style? Here are a few questions to ask yourself to help you know which direction to go.

  1. Which room in your home is your favorite? Is it the den because it has vintage, rich fabrics?  Do you love the kitchen because it’s filled with casual wicker and sunlight?  Is it the bathroom because of its soft colors and romantic ruffles? It’s a sure bet your favorite room has elements of your style.
  2. When you go out for dinner on your anniversary or birthday, which eatery do your choose? Do you opt for the elegant, formal continental restaurant?  Is the western steak house your first choice?  Are you enticed by the colors of the Mediterranean bistro? Chances are the décor makes you feel comfortable and relaxed.
  3. What type of art do you have on your walls? Art is a wholly personal purchase and a strong indicator of your style. Its color and form capture attention and emotion. Is there an abstract painting or poster hanging in your living room? If so, you’re drawn to contemporary design.  Does a Medieval tapestry hang in you hallway?  You’re definitely attracted to traditional furnishings.
  4. If you won the lottery, what would be your first décor purchase? Would it be a sleek leather sofa in red? Is a carved wood dining room calling your name? Is there an Oriental rug you absolutely can’t live without? An immediate purchase shows the item has been on your mind, and the style is one you truly desire.

By answering these short questions you’ll be able to see which style draws your attention.  Whatever your style choice, the goof-proof pros at Connell’s Furniture & Mattresses in Newark and Mt. Vernon can help you find perfect furniture and mattresses you’re going to love.

Choosing the Right Mattress

Category:

Have you put enough time and research into choosing the proper mattress? You should! Nearly one-third of our lives is spent sleeping; we invest more time into sleep than any other activity. Because of this, it’s vital to choose the right mattress with the proper support, firmness and size so you can get the sleep you need to live a healthier and more productive life.

Mattress Support and Firmness

The right mattress shouldn’t be too hard or too soft. A soft mattress can potentially provide poor support, resulting in muscle stiffness, and back and neck pain. Look for valleys or bumps on your mattress as a tell-tale sign that’s it’s too soft – consider purchasing a new, more supportive mattress when you find these indicators.

Moreover, a mattress that is too hard can exert too much force on pressure points such as the back, neck, shoulders and hips, which can contort the spine and lead to further sleep disturbances. The perfect mattress should mold to your body while providing gentle support and firmness.

Size

When it comes to mattresses, bigger is better. Consider this, the average person moves around generally 30 times each night. Combine this movement with a partner and sleeping space can become cramped or uncomfortable. Therefore, you may want to consider purchasing a larger mattress so you and your partner can sleep comfortably. Plus, many mattresses are designed to reduce tossing and turning, such as the Tempur-Pedic® Tempur-Cloud Luxe, and to also deflect your partner’s movements so you get the sleep you deserve.

Visit Connell’s Furniture & Mattresses in Mt. Vernon and Newark for the area’s largest selection of comfortable mattresses in every size designed to provide the proper support and firmness so you can get the sleep you deserve. Our sleep specialists will take the time to help you choose the perfect mattress for your bedroom and budget that provides the comfort you need for a great night’s sleep.

Spring Decorating Tips that Won’t Bust Your Budget!

Category:

Spring’s a time for change! It’s a new season and colorful new life is around us. Invite spring’s fresh and delicate colors into your home and refresh your living room and bedroom with some great looking, yet inexpensive, design tips from Connell’s Furniture & Mattresses.

  • Lighten Up! Kick that boring old dark-colored sofa, loveseat or recliner to the curb and invigorate your room with lighter, mid-toned colors. Decorate with the colors you see naturally occurring in nature, such as magenta, marigold, aqua blue, spring green, teal and even try hot pink!
  • Add accessories! Pillows and throws are a fantastic way to introduce some lighter colored fabrics into your room. Add patterned pillows with calm and tranquil colors to a solid-colored sofa to add bursts of flair. Or toss a patterned throw on the back of a chair, sectional or futon to bring your room to life. Hang colorful wall art and illuminating mirrors for some seasonal springtime style.
  • Paint! Rejuvenate a dreary dining room or lackluster bedroom by repainting the walls with some colorful paint. Designers agree this is a cost-saving solution since a couple of gallons of paint are very inexpensive, plus you can do it yourself. Try a color you’ve always been curious about – and if you hate it, just paint over it. Some suggestions: test out light and clean colors, like kiwi green, pale violet or coral blue.
  • Flowers! Indoor plants and fresh flowers will bring colorful life to any room. Try to be consistent with your floral arrangements. Choose a color scheme, use the same type of flower and place your floral arrangement in a pretty glass holder. Top it off with a little lace or a satin ribbon tied around your beautiful bouquet.
  • De-clutter! Clutter is distracting. No matter how beautiful your room is, unsightly piles of magazines, movies and media will ruin your spring decorating. Put entertainment in its place with media chests and hutches and stash your work away in filing cabinets, desks, and credenzas for your home office.

Visit Connell’s two convenient locations in Mt. Vernon and Newark for hundreds of stunning styles from spring’s latest furniture and mattress fashions. It’s all in stock, ready for immediate delivery and protected by Connell’s famous No Oops™ guarantee—if you don’t like your new furniture for any reason, we’ll take it back – no questions asked, no restocking fees, no return delivery charges and no penalties.

The Amazing Comfort of a Plush Mattress

Category:

After a long day of work, cooking dinner for your family and helping your kids with their homework, there’s nothing better than taking a load off and laying down in bed to relax. But nothing’s worse than resting on a mattress that’s harder than a box of rocks. Instead, you deserve a comfortable, soft plush mattress that will rejuvenate you to tackle life again the next day.  But what is a plush mattress and why does it provide such an unrivaled quality night’s sleep?

Plush mattresses offer a great night of sleep because they literally cradle you in comfort. The additional foam padding on a plush mattress literally conforms to your body. This eliminates an uncomfortable break-in period for the mattress while cradling your body in pure relaxation. Plush mattress technology also immediately responds to your movement while dissipating body heat to keep you at the ideal sleeping temperature. This unique engineering provides a pleasurable night of sleep that will leave you looking forward to sleeping on your mattress night after night.

Most current plush mattresses are made of synthetic fibers, or foam, designed to provide a soft and blissful sleeping experience. Plush mattresses, like Connell’s Beautyrest® World Class Alexandria Plush Mattress, offer an additional layer of extremely soft padding on the surface for the sleeper. Underneath this additional foam bedding, coils are in place to bring you the support you need so you don’t feel like you’re sleeping in quick sand. Plush mattresses are specifically engineered to provide an unprecedented amount of comfort without sacrificing any coil support.

Here is something to keep in mind: Although most plush mattresses are made from synthetic plush fibers, consider purchasing a mattress made with natural plush. Silk, cotton or velvet are higher qualities of plush and will provide an even softer and blissful night of sleep. Regardless of the material, plush mattresses have no downside and are an excellent choice for anyone considering a new mattress.

Visit either of Connell’s two convenient locations in Newark or Mt. Vernon and discover for yourself the the amazing relaxation only provided by a plush mattress.
