Fun DIY Christmas Gifts That Won’t Break The Budget

Like many of us, with Christmas quickly approaching, it can become a flurry of stress shopping for family and friends. Most of us have family to shop for, extended family to shop for, Christmas exchanges to shop for and a handful of friends to shop for as well. With so many people on the list, it’s overwhelming trying to pick out a unique gift for everyone without spending copious amounts of time and money.

So slow down this Christmas and get creative with tips from Connell’s Furniture & Mattresses for some simple, inexpensive and fun do-it-yourself gifts everyone is sure to love! DIY gifts are a great technique to get the kids involved and can be a fun way to get together with friends and share some ideas while putting together your gifts. Read on for some ideas:

Mason jar treats: Pinterest provides a plethora of terrific ideas for Mason jar gifts. But the idea is simple, buy half a dozen mason jars, and fill them with goodies (when filling with food or ingredients, layer them nicely to add an element of beauty)! Some terrific ideas include layered cookie mix, hot chocolate mix with marshmallows and chocolate chips, trail mix or fancy nuts. Some personalized Mason jar gifts even include grooming kits for men or women where you fill the Mason jar with clippers, a razor or a small pack of deodorant. The ideas are unlimited but the idea and concept is simple and easy to put together.

Christmas wreath: A Christmas wreath is a fun, crafty idea and the recipient can enjoy its radiant beauty on their front door or inside their home. To get started, head on down to a craft store and buy a wire wreath frame, some garland, and any other nice touches you want to add, like bows, bells, holly etc … When you get home, wrap the garland around your wire frame and add the accessories to make a beautiful decorative wreath.

Personalized ornaments: If you have kids, making ornaments can be a fun treat to pass several hours and make some beautiful personalized gifts. The easiest way to accomplish this is by buying some paintable plastic round ornaments from the dollar store, a little paint and other decorations such as glitter, glue and beads. Paint your ornaments in Christmas colors or even a beautiful dark blue, sprinkle your glitter onto the wet paint and glue the beads on when dry. And make the ornaments a joyous gift to be remembered by writing, “Baby’s First Christmas”, or write a personalized message to a newlywed couple spending their first Christmas together.

Some other great ideas include framing a nice picture collage of your family, or ordering personalized picture magnets, key chains mugs and more! Whatever your DIY gift is, enjoy the time spent making it with family and friends, and reflect on the joy it will give to its recipient.

From all of us at Connell’s Furniture & Mattress and Mt. Vernon and Newark, we’re wishing you a very Merry Christmas!

Fun Family Fall Outdoor Activities

Isn’t fall great? As the days get shorter and the weather begins to cool, we tend to want to get outside more and enjoy the season. And why not, fall brings new changes, such as leaves changing colors and seasonal fruits and vegetables. With that said, below are some fun seasonal activities from Connell’s Furniture & Mattresses the whole family can enjoy that will get you outside to enjoy the new season.

  • Go apple picking: One great place to take the entire family is Lynd Fruit Farm in Pataskala, OH. Right now, families can pick apples (including Gala, Honeycrisp, McIntosh, Cortland, Jonathan, and more!), and later in the season, pumpkin picking and sweet corn is also available. Plus, they offer a corn maze and plenty of safe and fun activities for the kids. You can’t go wrong at Lynd in the fall!
  • Take a hayride: Hayrides are a great way to get out and enjoy the weather, and kids sure love them! Many offer hot apple cider, hot chocolate and other warm beverages for autumn’s cool nights. And if you’re adventurous, some hayrides are even “haunted” to add a little excitement to the experience. Click here to find some local hayrides in Northwest Ohio, and other fun activities like corn mazes, pumpkin patches and more!
  • Make a fire pit and build a bonfire: It’s easy to build an attractive fire pit with some inexpensive retaining wall that the whole family can get years of enjoyment from (always check with your local fire department to make sure a fire pit is permitted at your home, and you’re not building it too close to property lines and/or fire hazards). Once constructed, it’s easy to start a bonfire and roast hot dogs, smores and enjoy the cool crisp season with family and friends.
  • Football Friday nights: Even if you don’t have a teenager that plays high school football, it’s still fun to go and support your local high school’s football team. It’s a fun environment and you’ll get to watch a fun football game and watch two marching bands perform.

As the season changes, let Connell’s Furniture & Mattresses in Newark and Mt. Vernon help you with your home furnishing needs. We have exactly what you’re looking for – whether you want to decorate your living room with fall’s best colors or your husband wants to outfit his “man cave” in the colors of favorite football team – with our great selection of furniture and mattresses at unbeatable everyday low prices. Come check us out, we promise you can’t make a mistake at Connell’s!

Mother’s Day is Coming!

Category:

Mother’s Day is just over a week away. Are you ready?

Who in the world is like mom? So many roles, sometimes all at the same time! She’s a cheerleader, nurturer, tutor, biggest fan, disciplinarian, taxi driver, nurse and more. And have you noticed she receives very little recognition for all she does? Remember mom this Mother’s Day, on Sunday May 13th. As always, we’ve got some tricks up our sleeve to get you started.

Quality time is THE BEST gift of all. More than any gift in the world, the gift your mom will love the most is the gift of time. Go to church with her, take her to lunch, go on a family walk or hike, catch a movie. Do what comes naturally for your family; just make the time to do it.

Do you have a working mom? Give her a day of rest. Buy her a gift certificate for a massage, pedicure, manicure, or even an entire day at the spa. All moms spend so much time caring for others, a gift of self nurturing would be blissful.

Is mom the a cooking diva? Give her a gift she’ll use, and think of you each time she does! With so many kitchen gadgets on the market, find something that will make her time in the kitchen easier and remind her of you each time she gets it out – choppers, mixing bowls, grinders, a coffee press – the options are limitless and in every price range!

A simple gift is always nice; flowers, chocolate, jewelry, frames, art, coffee, tea bags, soaps, candles, a heartwarming card. It’s the little things that matter most. Depending on taste, all moms would love at least one of those items. Go bigger and place several items in a beautiful basket that can be used for other things around the house.

Is sentimental more your thing? Or perhaps it’s more mom’s thing? Really get her with this one. Choose a handmade gift that’s from the heart. Find a multi-window photo frame. Fill it with family photos old and new, along with cards and notes from years past. (You may need dad’s help with this one.) Mom now owns a treasured keepsake unique to your family.

Come to Connell’s for other great ideas. We have thousands of items for every room, style and occasion. Find furniture, mattresses and accessories for any taste and budget. Mom will be overwhelmed with the time you spent finding that “just right” gift for her!

Really WOW her this Mother’s Day! Go in with dad to buy her the new sofa, loveseat, office chair or credenza she’s been eying! Or better yet, surprise them both with a brand new flat panel HDTV!

Stop in to one of the two Connell’s locations in Mt. Vernon and Newark today. Share your ideas – and this post on Facebook! Show mom you care this Mother’s Day and let us know her reaction!

Happy Fourth of July

Fireworks, sparklers, family, friends, food, fun and more . . . welcome the 4th of July holiday. Whether you’re a low-key kinda guy or a girl who likes to go all out, you’ve come to the right place for holiday celebration ideas. Each fourth of July, we celebrate our independence and we celebrate each other. Right smack in the middle of summer break, Independence Day is the perfect holiday to spend with family and friends. Read on to learn more and decide how you’ll spend your 4th of July holiday this year.

Hold an old fashion backyard barbeque. Whether it’s burgers and brats you seek or pulled pork over a smoker, no one can resist a barbeque. The fourth of July is the perfect time for a party as such because of all the garden varieties that are now available – corn on the cob, tomatoes, peppers, broccoli and cauliflower. Big or small, a barbeque is sure to please.

What about a simple picnic in the park? When was the last time you packed a lunch and headed to the park? The simplicity of it is perfect and the kids will be delighted. There are so many parks around Central Ohio to enjoy, all with varying sights and scenes. Many of the parks also have trails connecting them to others if you want to get some exercise with the family after devouring grandma’s famous chocolate cake.

Attend a concert. Check the internet or local paper and get out to listen to live music somewhere. Free and low cost concerts of all types abound. Round up the kids and show them how to really dance!

Chill out on – or in – the water. Rent a boat, jet ski, canoe, kayak or paddleboat for the day. If that’s not your thing, take the kids swimming at the local pool or lake. If we get the heat we are expecting this week, spending time around water will be the perfect way to spend the fourth of July.

Don’t forget the fireworks. There are Independence Day firework celebrations all around Central Ohio and many of them occur on different nights. Plan it just so and you might manage to take in two or three of these fantastic colorful displays this year.

Buy something new for your home. We couldn’t leave this one out, but you also don’t want us to! The middle of the summer is the perfect time to find that just right piece at a price you won’t get any other time of the year.

Stop in to one of the two Connell’s locations today in Mt. Vernon and Newark and let us know how we can help you celebrate in style!

Summertime Entertainment

Summer has it all – great weather, more entertaining, outdoor sporting events, sunning, swimming, and more. Now that it is mid-summer the kids are well into “summer mode”, not yet ready to go back to school, but often bored with the unscheduled routine summer brings. Get a reliable babysitter or two and get all the kids together for a pool party. They’ll have a blast seeing friends they haven’t seen since school ended, and you’ll have free time for an outing of your own. Plan a party with friends, family and neighbors, then take in the local attractions that summertime has to offer.

Here are some ideas to help you create an evening of entertainment and fun . . .

Celebrate summer with an easy gathering at home. Perhaps a wine tasting party? Ask guests to bring two of the same bottles of wine – one for tasting and one as a party favor for a guest to take home. Choose a particular style to keep the tastes similar, such as chardonnay, a sweet white or riesling. Encourage those who don’t drink to bring a non-alcoholic variety. Keep plenty of ice cold water with lemon on hand in beautiful pitchers to beat the heat.

Don’t forget the details. It doesn’t have to be fancy, but make your party cohesive and pretty with stemless wine glasses, cocktail plates, pretty floral cloth napkins, a summertime table cloth and other fun accessories.

Use the great outdoors. Though it is hot, most folks like to be outdoors in the summer. Use your outdoor spaces as much as possible. Create a beautiful shady spot in your garden or turn your patio or deck into the perfect party spot.

Make your own centerpiece using beautiful hardy fruits or flowers from the garden. A simple platter of lemons, limes and oranges adds color and beauty to the center of your table. Just a few colorful flowers along with pussy willows or twigs is also a simple way to create beauty.

Simple foods fit the bill. Appetizers like bruschetta, chips and salsa, spinach artichoke dip, a colorful salad and shrimp cocktail will allow guests to fill their bellies but not bust a gut.

Don’t neglect your home furnishings. While many may want to be outdoors, the heat can keep some at bay. Take a look at your dwelling. Could you use a new sofa? What about an entertainment center or console? Even just adding a few accessories like pillows, throws and table tops can transform your home at relatively low cost.

Your party is only the pre-party. Make plans to attend a festival, garden or art gallery after your party. Check out these local events and spaces:

As always, stop in to see a Connell’s associate at one of our two locations in Mt. Vernon and Newark for fabulous home furnishings, excellent savings and customer service beyond compare.

New Year’s Resolutions for the Home

It’s hard to believe it’s almost 2012. Where did the time go? Isn’t that the question we ask ourselves every year as we grow older? It really is hard to believe how time flies! Nonetheless, it will be 2012 in just a few short days. Have you started making your New Year’s Resolutions? Did you think about your home when doing so?

Your home is your castle, your haven, your safe place to rest. Shouldn’t you nurture and take care of it in the same way you take care of yourself and your loved ones? Consider making at least one resolution for your home and take some time to nurture your relationship to your home. It keeps you warm and dry, doesn’t laugh when you cry and likely takes lots of abuse with all of the time you and your family spend there. Here are a few ideas to get you thinking about your own New Year’s Resolutions for you home!

ALL YEAR:

Commit to a room makeover each quarter. Room makeovers don’t have to be huge to be fabulous. Rearrange furniture. Switch pillows and wall hangings out from one room to another. Collect your children’s artwork and buy frames to proudly display them. Want to go bigger? Repaint just one wall. Buy one new piece of furniture. Accessorize in a way you never thought you would. Bigger yet? Go for it! Redo an entire room in 2012. Spread it out over the year if necessary.

ALL YEAR/SPRING:

Do you hate to clean? Make it a ritual and include the whole family. Get the kids involved and offer to give them commission for a job well done. Make your own homemade cleaning supplies that are far less toxic than the ones you find on the shelves. There are all sorts of books and online resources that will show you how, using simple ingredients like vinegar, water, essential oils and baking soda!

Start a garden! When thinking of your home, think of your whole home – the inside and out. If you’ve never had a garden, do it this year. Start small if it seems daunting. Grow a few herbs in pots indoors to use in your favorite dishes. Grow a tomato plant or two in different varieties – think big, large and juicy, as well as small cherry tomatoes for yummy salads in the summer. Potatoes are easy, as are peppers in all varieties and broccoli.

SUMMER:

Host a dinner party or fun barbeque. This is your year! Since you’ve committed to spending some time and energy on your home, host a gathering. Feature your garden beauties and simple fare. Decorate for the season and enjoy your guests. Try it once and you’ll be hooked – friends and food always equals good times!

Bring nature inside whenever possible. Cut a few flowers from the garden or purchase a bouquet from the store to brighten up your home on a regular basis. Try out your green thumb on a new plant or two. Flowers and plants are life and they beautify your home like nothing else.

FALL/WINTER:

Take stock of your belongings. Give what you can away to others who need and will use it. Buy something new for your home. You deserve it and by giving  your gently used stuff away, others will benefit. Connell’s regularly hosts different functions for charity encouraging you to do so. Stay tuned as the year goes on.

Ready, set, bring on 2012! You – and your home – are ready! Stop in to one of the two Connell’s locations today in Mt. Vernon and Newark for more ideas, design tips, beautiful home furnishings and unbeatable customer service. Plus, don’t forget to join us on Facebook for regular updates, specials, sweepstakes and more!

Celebrate Labor Day!

You work hard for your money! Take a day to celebrate. Labor Day is for JUST THAT.

For most of us, the holiday marks the official end of summer. While the “season” lasts a bit longer from a planetary aspect, for all intents and purposes summer is over by Labor Day. The kids are back in school. The days are getting noticeably shorter. The mornings and evenings are cooler. Football is beginning. Yep, sayonara summer!

According to the Department of Labor, “Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.” Source: http://www.dol.gov/opa/aboutdol/laborday.htm

Celebrate this Labor Day with friends and family. As always, Connell’s Furniture and Mattresses has some great ideas to get your brains moving.

Take advantage of the sales. Historically, Labor Day offers some of the best sales ever, and at Connell’s this is exceptionally true. During our Labor Day Sale, you can take No Interest Financing until 2017*, or BIG DISCOUNTS on cash purchases*. We’ve slashed prices all over the store! Stop in and see us between now and Labor Day to take advantage of the savings.

Throw a party! Now that you’ve got the brand spankin’ new sofa – loveseat set or sectional, break it in by holding a Labor Day shindig for friends and family. Get the brats and burgers on the grill, sautee the veggies from the garden, squeeze some fresh lemonade, and you’re ready to go.

Check out a local Friday night football game. When is the last time you watched high school football? There is some amazing local talent, it’s a great support to your local community, and the kids will have a blast.

Enjoy the awesome weather. Join in a walk or run for charity. Labor day often hosts many local charity events that will get you up and moving. Check out Ohio Runner for events near you. Visit a local park to get moving. Most parks offer trails that encourage all sorts of physical activity – walking, running, hiking, rollerblading, kayaking and more.

Attend a Labor Day event. The Columbus Dispatch has a number of local events listed. Check it out and celebrate your hard work.

As always, think of Connell’s the next time you’re in the market for home furnishings. Mother’s Day Is This Sunday

Who loves ya baby? Mom does!

When you can count on no one else, it seems mom is always there. She nursed and cared for you as a baby, kept you from harm as a toddler, put you in line as an adolescent, provided a shoulder in your teenage years, and is still your biggest fan as a young adult or adult. No matter what your age, you know mom has always got your back.  Show mom how much you appreciate her this Mother’s Day with these gift and planning ideas.

Small tokens of appreciation. Mom probably doesn’t want or need much, so the small things really matter. If you no longer live at home, go visit and take flowers. Buy her a Starbucks gift card that will keep on giving through the year. If she loves to read, pick up the latest bestseller. Hanging flower baskets are selling everywhere these days — wouldn’t one look great on her front porch?

Quality time is the best gift ever. Go to church with mom and then take her out to lunch, brunch or coffee. Plan a small family gathering on Mother’s Day. Help her plant the garden, organize a neglected area of the home, or just hang out.

Let mom be a queen for a day. Buy her a massage, manicure, pedicure and/or facial. Treat she and dad to a night out on the town.

Find that just right gift for her castle. Buy her that new sofa – loveseat combo or sectional she’s been wanting for a while now. What about a new television or surround sound stereo? Maybe the dining room is in need of an upgrade. If you have it within your means, give back to mom. She deserves it for all she has done for you!

Whatever you decide, let Connell’s help. We’re located in Mt. Vernon and Newark. Stop in today for beautiful home furnishings at exceptional prices and the best customer service around.

Father’s Day Is This Sunday

Category:

This Sunday June 16th is Father’s Day. How are you celebrating? Be sure to remember all of the special men in your life who are fathers – your own father, step fathers, grandfathers, brothers who are fathers, friends who are fathers and more. At Connell’s, we have great gift ideas. We also have celebration ideas to help you recognize all of the special men in your life.

Quality time. Show dad you care by spending quality time with him. Plan an impromptu party if the schedule is free on Sunday afternoon. If things are too hectic on Father’s Day itself, invite dad out for lunch, brunch or coffee, or go see that action movie with him and give mom a night off.

Intangibles. Dad works hard, whether he’s still working or retired. Give him a gift he can share with others. Gift dad with things he loves – a round of golf, the movies, dinner, coffee, ice cream.

Small tokens. Sometimes the smallest gifts mean the most. Fishing lures or a new pole for your fisherman dad show dad you care. A new club, bag, or set of balls and tees for your golfer dad will have him ready for summer. A gift card to his favorite bookstore is great if your dad is an avid reader.

Celebration. Nothing says “thanks dad,” like remembering him with the gift of a party. Plan a lunch, picnic or family barbecue gathering to celebrate the occasion.

Big gift. At Connell’s we have just what dad wants! Get him a new recliner or oversized recliner to watch all his favorite sports teams from. A new sofa with recliners built in is also an excellent idea for the whole family!

Stop in to one of our two locations in Mt. Vernon and Newark today. We have beautiful home furnishings at exceptional savings, all backed by our famous No Oops Guarantee.

Happy Father’s Day from our family to yours!

New Year’s Resolutions For Your Home

Each year, most of spend time dreaming about the year ahead. Often that dreaming takes the shape of cultivating New Years Resolutions, Intentions and/or Goals. When was the last time you set a goal for your entire household? Maybe 2013 should be that year! Sit in quiet reflection, noticing the things your home really needs and allow that to direct your efforts. Or, take a few clues from us. Here are FIVE New Year’s Resolutions you can adopt for your own home.

Spend time with family. That’s right. Look around your home and determine if there are any do-it-yourself projects that would be fun to tackle as a family. With home improvement stores everywhere, there are so many things you can do today that you might have had to hire a professional to do in the past. These DIY projects can be as simple as an interesting paint pattern in one of your rooms, or as difficult as completely renovating an entire room or area of your home.

Get rid of stuff. Nothing says “Happy New Year” like the act of de-cluttering. Over time we accumulate so much stuff and in the daily grind we often don’t have the time to go through the stuff until it’s piled up to a mountainous fright. Clean out the garage, basement, or attic. Perhaps the home office has so much paper it’s a fire hazard. Maybe your kids are grown and you still have Disney DVDs lying around. When de-cluttering, think of others. Can you donate it to charity or give it to a friend who would enjoy it?

Cut energy usage in 2013. There are so many ways you can cut your energy usage. Turn the heat down when you are not home. Change your light bulbs to CFL bulbs. Buy a low-flow shower head. Turn off power strips when not in use. Line dry your clothes and try composting for a change.

Purify the air. Get an air purifying system that cleans the air and leaves you feeling fresh and rejuvenated. Keep your HVAC system up to par by changing your filters regularly. In fireplaces, burn real wood instead of the pressed wood products you’ll find in stores. And our favorite way to purify the air? Get more houseplants. They are natural air purifiers and they beautify your home like nothing else.

Treat yourself for your hard work. Come to one of the two Connell’s locations in Mount Vernon or Newark, and treat yourself and your home to something special. Perhaps it’s time you get a new mattress so you can sleep more soundly and be able to tackle all of your other goals and intentions for 2013. Maybe a new dining room is in order, or that beautiful sofa, love or sectional is just waiting for a new space within your home. Whatever is your hearts desire, make 2013 the year of your home!

Mother’s Day Gift Ideas

This Sunday is Mother’s Day and we haven’t forgotten at Connell’s. Have you?

There’s no one else like mom – nurturer, cheerleader, disciplinarian, taxi driver, tutor, biggest fan, nurse. She does it all and asks for no recognition much of the time. Don’t forget your mom this Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 8th. We’ll even get you started with some ideas!

Spend time with mom! More than any gift in the world, the gift your mom will love the most is the gift of time. Go to church with her, take her to lunch, have a family walk in the park. Do whatever comes naturally for your family, but just make the time to do it.

Give a simple trinket of affection; flowers, chocolate, jewelry, frames, art, coffee, tea bags, soaps, candles, a heartwarming card. It’s the little things that matter most. Depending on taste, all moms would love at least one of those sentiments. Go bigger and place several items in a beautiful basket that can be used for other things around the house.

Does your mom work hard? Buy her a gift certificate for a massage, pedicure, manicure, or even a whole day at the spa. All moms spend so much time caring for others, wouldn’t you love to give her one hour or one day to nurture herself?

Is mom the family cook? With so many kitchen gadgets on the market, find something that will make her time in the kitchen easier and remind her of you each time she uses it – choppers, mixing bowls, grinders, a coffee press – the options are limitless and in every price range!

Want to make her cry? Choose a handmade gift that’s from the heart. Find a multi-window photo frame. Fill it with family photos old and new, along with cards and notes from years past. (You may need dad’s help with this one.) Mom now owns a treasured keepsake unique to your family.

Come to Connell’s for other great ideas. We have thousands of items for every room, style and occasion. Find furniture, mattresses and accessories for any taste. Mom will be overwhelmed with the time you spent finding that “just right” gift only for her!

Really WOW her this Mother’s Day! Go in with dad to buy her the new sofa, loveseat, office chair or credenza she’s been eying! Or better yet, surprise them both with a brand new flat panel HDTV!

Share your ideas – and this post on Facebook! Show mom you care this Mother’s Day and let us know her reaction!

Try something new. Warmer weather invites growth which produces beautiful fruits and vegetables from the garden. Choose your favorite fruit or vegetable and find a new recipe with it as the featured food item. Lighter fare like appetizers and chilled soup are wonderful selections this time of year.

Flowers on food? Yes! Use real flowers on food as a garnish – but make sure to inform your guests that they are just that! Whip up simple vanilla cupcakes with cream cheese icing and add beautiful spring flowers to the top for that extra pizazz. Your guests will say, “how beautiful! I never thought of that!” and you’ll look like a domestic goddess. Score!

Celebrate family! It’s not necessary to invite guests to have a good time. Announce to the kids that you are having a Family Night and throw a party for yourselves. Let the kids help make kabobs and other finger foods. Have them set the table and get out the games. Whether outside or in, a good time is sure to be shared by all.

At Connell’s, we don’t just sell furniture and mattresses! We help you celebrate your home. After all, there’s “no place like  home.” Stop in to one of our two locations today for home furnishings, mattresses, accessories and other ideas to turn your home into a wonderful gathering place for friends, family, and acquaintances. And don’t forget to find us and share your experiences on Facebook! Stop back next week for more home ideas and design tips!
