Color is Key

Without a doubt, color is perhaps the most important decorating element. And even though it may seem like a daunting task, choosing a color scheme to tie your entire home together doesn’t have to be chore. Simply choose some colors you love as a starting point, and read on for some tips from Connell’s Furniture & Mattresses to make your favorite colors work together throughout your entire home.

How to pick your colors

Find an object (which we’ll refer to as an inspiration piece) with a color scheme you enjoy. Your inspiration piece should generally be something multicolored like a rug, throw or even a picture. Use your inspiration pieces to select the hues that work well together throughout your entire home.

Applying your colors to different rooms

Give each room its own color and personality. As you repeat your color scheme throughout your house in different rooms, it will tie your rooms together to create a feeling of comfort and cohesion.

How do I decide what color to use in a certain room?

Start with the rooms where you spend a good chunk of your time. Decide what kind of feel or mood you want to create in those rooms, and then ask yourself what colors will help you achieve that mood. Use that color for the walls and/or ceiling. For furniture, look for fabrics that combine your inspiration piece colors in varying amounts and shades.

Never feel like you have to match colors perfectly. Remember, you love the colors in your home and the feel and comfort they give to your rooms. And if you believe the color just isn’t right, try a darker or lighter shade. Always choose the colors you like best for decorating success!

Choosing a color for a certain feel

  • Red: Red can be common in dining rooms, bedrooms and studies. Red expresses passion, zeal, and can help with appetite.
  • Orange: Orange is a very warm color and hard to tone down. Consider using this only as an accent color.
  • Yellow: Pale yellow creates a bright, crisp pleasing environment, while sharp yellow can create deterrence.
  • Green: Green is a peaceful color that blends well in any room and will compliment your existing color scheme.
  • Blue: Blue is also a peaceful color. Light blues make a room refreshing, while a dark blue can be somber.
  • Violet: Violet can communicate romance, but it’s being used more commonly in living rooms or bedrooms to create a feel of serenity.

Whatever color combination you choose, come to Connell’s Furniture & Mattress in Mt. Vernon and Newark for friendly advice and a great selection of quality furniture sure to create a beautiful color combination for your entire home.

Tips and Trends When Shopping For Kids Furniture

Kid’s love trendy furniture just as much as we adults do, and as adults, it sure is fun picking out bedroom furniture they’re sure to love! What’s more, most major furniture manufacturers are designing quality and adorable youth furniture built for safety, fun, functionality and sleep. Read on for some tips and trends from Connell’s Furniture & Mattresses for today’s youth furniture, and visit us in store at Mt. Vernon and Newark, and online to shop our huge selection of kid’s furniture.

Shopping for functional nursery furniture that will grow with your child

One of the biggest trends today is furniture that grows with your child. Furniture that grows with your child is extremely popular since one purchase can last for years through your kid’s developmental stages. For example, many manufacturers offer convertible cribs that convert into a bed or daybed when your child gets older.

Another example is a “combo dresser.” A combo dresser combines a dresser and a hutch with a changing pad under a flip-up top and plenty of room to hold baby supplies. When the dresser is flipped upside down, the changing pad hutch disappears and it looks like a regular dresser with large drawers. The drawers are reversible and have double sets of tracks as well.

Other ways the industry is meeting parental demand is with changing tables that convert to toy chests, bunk beds that have a twin on top and full on the bottom and raised beds that have a desk underneath. Don’t be afraid to be practical when shopping with your child.

Personalization

While functional furniture that grows with your child is important, there is still that element of making a child’s room, a child’s room.

For the baby and toddler, some parents look for a monogram crib bumper or even rocking stools with pictures on them. Many manufacturers now offer personalization from everything to baby furniture, and youth furniture well into the teenage years.

What’s more, manufacturers specialize in everything from kid’s rugs, lamps, artwork to bedspreads. Accents are where a child’s personality can really liven up your child’s bedroom, and they can be found in every shape and design imaginable. You and your child will love picking out customizable accents together.

Safety

Finally, safety is probably the most important aspect to consider when shopping for kid’s furniture. Nonetheless, manufacturers and current designs are generally extremely safety oriented. For example, most toy boxes now are designed so they won’t snap shut on little fingers. Also, the industry is moving towards non-moving parts.

When considering any furniture for your kids, stop by Connell’s Furniture & Mattresses for a huge selection of furniture and quality advice.

Five Common Decorating Myths

We’ve all heard different decorating myths from time-to-time. Do this and don’t that to avoid color clashes or a mismatch of patterns. Nonetheless, the most common decorating myths are false! They take away from our creative inspiration and limit our designs. At Connell’s Furniture & Mattresses, we encourage you to get creative and remember, these are simply myths.

1. You can have only one metallic tone in a room. Take a quick trip to your local home improvement store and check out some of their kitchen displays. You’ll notice silver and gold tones are mixed. Keep this in mind when you consider your kitchen design and drawer pulls for your bedroom.

2. Never mix floral and plaid patterns. If you look at some modern living room designs, companies now coordinate floral and plaid patterns in the same color pattern to be used together. As long as the color pattern remains constant, it’s safe to mix floral and plaid patterns.

3. Pick one style and stick with it! Modern designs reflect many different eclectic influences. It’s safe to change your style from room-to-room, and even within the same room. Whether you prefer a casual or a more formal approach to furnishing your home, the contrast of different styles enlivens the space.

4. Never place your furniture symmetrically. As we noted  above, since you can mix floral patterns with plaid, the left side of your room doesn’t have to match the right. Use asymmetry to create a focal point and interest, while leading to a more casual style.

5. Books belong on bookshelves. Books are a great way to add color and interest to a room. A common use of books, off of the bookshelf, is to place them on the coffee table as a focal point or talking point. Stacks of books can also be used to elevate a lamp or a plant in a table top arrangement. If you are feeling adventurous, you can stack several oversized books to the side of a chair to serve as an end table. When you use a bookcase, not every book has to be standing on end; try laying some flat and place decorative accessories on top.

Home design should not be restrictive, it should be freeing. Visit us at Connell’s Furniture & Mattress in Newark and Mt. Vernon for some clever design tips that are outside of the box.

But don’t let the advent of rainy, cool weather get you down! Rain or shine, there’s still plenty of fun in store for the second half of October. Here’s what’s coming up.

As usual, Connell’s Furniture & Mattresses takes this opportunity to travel on down to the furniture market to pick out the latest trends and styles of brand new furniture we know you’re going to love.

In fact, the High Point Market is the world’s largest furniture tradeshow in the world, brining more than 75,000 people together from more than 100 countries on 11.5 million square feet of showroom space! Now that’s a lot of furniture! And as the High Point Market Website says, “if you can’t find it in High Point…it probably doesn’t exist.”

So, that’s why we make the trip down to High Point in the fall, to bring the newest and best furniture back home just for you. Halloween:

Halloween will be here in a little less than 3 weeks! Whether you have kids who will be trick-or-treating, you’re an empty nester or a single family, we have several fun ways to celebrate this Halloween!

  • Invite trick-or-treaters over: If you’re not out trick-or-treating with your kids, it’s a ton of fun to turn on the porch light and pass out candy. Just put up some decorations – like a fake cobweb, and stuff some of your leaves into an orange pumpkin bag – dress up in a costume and buy a few bags of candy for the kids and have fun passing it out! It’s always a blast to see the smiles on the kids’ faces.
  • Go trick-or-treating: It’s always fun to go trick-or-treating with your children, nieces or nephews or a group. Offer to chaperone your family around and have a blast with the little ones while they gather candy!
  • Drive through your neighborhood and look at Halloween decorations: Anymore, it seems people spend as much time decorating their homes for Halloween as they do for Christmas. From inflatable pumpkins, fake tombstones, spiders, to scarecrows, it can be a blast to drive the neighborhood and see the decorations. So pack the family into the car and take a drive!

From all of us at Connell’s Furniture & Mattress in Mt. Vernon & Newark, we’re wishing you a very safe and Happy Halloween!

A Beautiful Bedroom

Did you know that the majority of us spend one third of our lives sleeping? Where are the other two thirds spent? Work, family time, free time, down time? Regardless, one third is a pretty good chunk of time. Do you spend your time sleeping in a bedroom you adore, or one that’s the last room in the house to receive attention? Find both time and inspiration to create a bedroom of your dreams. Then use your bedroom for more than sleeping – rest, relaxation, reading, a hobby. Create a bedroom that you look forward to spending time in, and start getting some of your best sleep yet!

Clear the clutter. First things first; get rid of the extra stuff you’ve accumulated in your bedroom – piles of clothes, old magazines, burned down candles, extra accessories. Once the clutter has been cleared, you can plainly see what you have to work with.

Buy your dream bed. If there is any one piece of furniture you splurge on, it should be your bed. Come to Connell’s and let one of our sleep experts help you decide the best bed for you. There are so many options to choose from, and getting it just right can make the difference between a great night’s sleep and tossing and turning for hours. Buy the best bed you can afford and sleep soundly tonight!

Choose accent pieces that you both love, and are functional. Perhaps a few simple end tables are just enough. Maybe your room is large enough to accommodate a small sofa or settee and coffee table. Do you want a television in your bedroom or not? Be planful about your accent pieces and go with the ones that you really adore.

Allow the room to speak to you. Make a plan. Do you want soft  and comfortable, or bold and beautiful? It’s your room, so let the vibe speak to you. Dream a little. Peruse home decor magazines for inspiration and ideas.

Be comfortable. Just like you should spend a little extra on a mattress, also search for the perfect comforter and sheet set. One third of your life should be comfortable and cozy. Buy down for the colder winter months, or look for a soft microfiber blanket that just begs you curl up before dozing off to dreamland.

Allow your bedroom to serve multiple purposes. If you are an avid reader, create a reading nook. If you are a quilter, set up a spot to do some of your sewing. Perhaps art is your thing; a space for painting is perfect in the bedroom.

Breathe life into it. Plants are always a great option in any room, and the bedroom is no exception. Choose plants of varying shapes and sizes and watch the room transform.

Come to one of the two Connell’s locations today in Mount Vernon or Newark and plan your next great room. As always, expect beautiful home furnishings at the lowest possible prices, all delivered with exceptional customer service.

Make Your Home a Sanctuary

Summertime invites a plethora of socializing, sports and outdoor activities. Luckily we have more energy in the summer with the warmer, brighter and longer days. Don’t drain yourself with all the get up and go! Take time to pamper yourself so you feel energized and ready for the beautiful days of the season. Read on for ideas to treat yourself like the king or queen of the house you are.

Make your bedroom a relaxation haven. We often take care of every other room in the home and ignore our bedroom. Change that! Your bedroom shouldn’t be a catch-all, but a place of rest and rejuvenation. Clear the clutter and get rid of anything that doesn’t invite a clear mental attitude.

  • Place a nightstand next to your bed and keep a book, journal or pen there. Take the time each night for some reading or gratitude reflection and journal writing.
  • Add some extra throw pillows and soft blankets to snuggle in as you doze off to dreamland.
  • Buy a stereo or music player for soft music when its time to relax.
  • Shop for a new mattress if yours is old and not supporting you the way it should be.

Set up a bathroom spa. Create a basket or box for an on-the-go spa experience. Keep it neat and organized so you can reach for it anytime you need a quick pick me up! Include the following:

  • A nail kit complete with cuticle softener, nail files, smoothers, hand moisturizer and nail polish
  • A pedicure kit with sugar (to make a sugar scrub) and foot bath
  • A shower kit with soaps, gels, loofah and scrubs

Give yourself the comfort and convenience of a reading nook. For ideas on organizing the area, read this post.

Nothing says summer like old fashioned ice cream! Get some sundae glasses, cherries, chocolate, sprinkles and an ice cream maker and spend time unwinding in your kitchen with the kids in the evening. I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!

Create a family gathering space. Find a spot in your home and set up a lounging area for family and friends to unwind. Make the space television-free so it invites good old family interaction. The space can be anywhere room allows. Place movable pieces of furniture including chairs, ottomans, loveseats and storage benches in the area. Add throws and pillows for comfort.

Try some of these tips or run into one of the two Connell’s locations in Mt. Vernon or Newark today and talk to a sales associate about ways to turn your home into your own summertime sanctuary. You’ve got the home, family and ideas – we’ve got the goods to make it perfect for you for any occasion.

What do a fireman and a motorcycle mechanic know about decorating your home?

My dad, Don, started selling used furniture in downtown Mount Vernon in 1957, he was a full-time fireman and part-time janitor just trying to make ends meet for his family.  Later my mom, Helen, brought her intuitive sense of interior decorating and flair for fashion to the company.  I started my career at Connell’s after graduating from college in 1976.

Then came the motorcycle mechanic…Curt…my son.  After going to a motorcycle mechanic’s school Curt decided to join us in the family business.  His mission was to bring our company into the 21st century.  Today we have state of the art technology that saves you time and money.  Heck, this web site was his “brain child.”  Now you can shop online or view 1000’s of pieces of furniture from your home at your convenience.

You gotta love savvy young “out-of-the-box” thinkers like Curt…I know I do.

Not all sofas are created equal…

I know, I know…you walk into a furniture store and look over a sea of sofas trying to find on that catches your eye.  After setting on nearly every sofa in the store you settle on two.  One is $499 and the other is $999.  You ask yourself…”why is this one only $499 and the other one kinda looks the same but it’s twice as much”.  Does that mean the $499 sofa is as good as the $999 sofa only it’s half the price?

Looks can be deceiving (remember your mom telling you that) at any price when it comes to buying a sofa.  Unfortunately, you can’t see what’s inside either sofa so it’s difficult to know what you’re buying.  The quality of these two sofas can differ as much as men and women do.

I think one of the best ways to judge the value of a sofa is what I call the $100 rule. On average for every $100 you spend on a sofa you should expect a year usage.  So, if you buy a $499 sofa you should expect it to last around 5 years and if you buy a $999 sofa you should expect it to last around 10 years…genius huh?  So, if you don’t mind replacing your sofa every five years or so you might want to buy the cheaper one and spend the extra money on lamps or end tables.

“Honey, who’s that scary looking guy at the front door?”

Have you ever noticed that most delivery services hire big ugly guys that look like they just rolled out of bed to deliver the precious cargo that you just bought and saved for months?  Okay, maybe some of them  aren’t very big but, most of them are pretty scary looking, aren’t they?  Most stores look at delivery as a necessary evil not as a valuable service.  So, they hire guys that are willing to work for low wages without any incentives to make you happy.  Just get it in the door and move on to the next delivery.  And try not to step on the cat…please. Can you believe some stores charge as much as $100 for this kind of service?

We think our delivery service is one of the best values we offer.  That’s why we call our guys the DREAM TEAM. You get trained caring (yes, ladies…some guys do care) professionals that will treat you and your home with respect.  And we charge a whopping $39.95!  Oh yea, if you’re not completely satisfied with our DREAM TEAM delivery service…we’ll refund your money.  How’s that for value?

(for guys only) when in doubt…read the directions

A lot of furniture today comes from far away places like China.  They basically build 1000’s of pieces of “ready-to-assemble” furniture then carefully pack them into shipping containers that eventually end up in our warehouse.  It’s done that way to save shipping cost.  Unfortunately, someone has to put this stuff together…that’s where we come in.

We open the boxes and separate all the nuts & bolts, shelves, tops, panels, and various other parts needed to create a nice piece of furniture.  Then we get our portable drills with special bits and start putting part “a” into slot “e4” and bolt “c3” with hex nut “d7″…well, you get the picture.  Sometimes you need a master’s degree in “erectorsetology” (I made that up) to assemble some of these treasures.

So guy, the next time you want to buy a piece of furniture that comes “ready-to-assemble” make sure you have lots of time, tools, and a bottle of Jack Daniels handy cause you’re going to need it.  I’d also suggest you put it together somewhere out of site like the garage or basement because after all the cursing you’re probably going to hear…”honey, did you read the directions?”

Or better yet…you be the hero.  Buy it from us and pay our $39.95 Dream Team Delivery fee and have your furniture assembled, delivered, and set-up anywhere in your home.  Trust me…you’ll thank me for this tip.  Now, go out there and sleigh that dragon.

Sorry lady. You bought it…you keep it!

"Uh...that's not what I had in mind"

Trying to return furniture that you don’t like isn’t as easy as retuning a sweater you just bought at your local department store.  Beware of the dreaded “restocking fee”. Simply put, if you are not happy with that new sofa you just bought most furniture stores will charge you a hefty fee to return is.  This can range for 10% to as much as 50% depending on each store’s return policy.  And heaven help you if you try to return a SPECIAL ORDER…most stores treat it like toxic waste…you bought it…you keep it.

Check out our return policy.  We call it “No Oops”.  If you’re not happy with the new furniture you bought from us we’ll take it back…no questions asked.  So before you buy that new sofa that looked smaller in the store then when you got it home ask to see the store’s return policy.  It can save you lots of money and loads of heart ache.

“Someone’s been sleeping in my bed…”

Remember when you used to be able to fall asleep on the floor at your friend’s slumber party?  Or when you used to stay out half the night and get up after two hours of sleep and go to work?  Well, if you’re like me, you’re older and wiser (I’m just older).  Life’s little aches and pains begin to take their toll and the only way to rejuvenate those tired old muscles is to get a good night’s sleep.  And it all starts with a good mattress.  Let’s face it, you spend one third of your life in bed and most people get up feeling like we just wrestled a bear (and I don’t mean your spouse).

Here are some tips that will help you when you buy your next mattress.

Budget

Spend half as much on a good bed as you would your wife’s engagement ring. Uh oh, some of you guys are getting a little nervous right now, let me explain.  Most young men ready to pop the question will spend about two month’s salary on the love of their life.  I recommend you spend around one month’s salary on a good bed.  You should expect at least ten years of usage when you buy a high quality mattress…wow, that’s over 29,000 hours you’re going to be sleeping on that bed!  One rule of thumb is (man, now I’m beginning to sound like my grandpa) the more you spend…the better you’ll feel each morning. That’s why people rave about the beds at most 5 star hotels…they don’t buy cheap mattresses!

Size

Buy the biggest bed your budget and your room will allow.  I’ve never talked to a customer yet that said “my bed is too big”.  Twin size (39″x74″) and full size (48″x74″) beds are great for singles while queen size (60″x80″) and king size (78″x80″) beds are highly recommended for two.  Most customers tell us they need more room to spread out and get comfortable.  Let’s face it, we all get a little “wider” the older we get.  We need our space.

Firmness

This truly is a matter of personal choice.  Some people like sleeping on beds that are hard as a rock while others like pillow soft beds.  Mattresses with multiple layers of foam, cotton, and heavy gauge coils deliver a lot of comfort for the buck.  But, consider a high quality memory foammattress.  These beds offer a unique combination of good comfort and great support.  We highly recommend Tempur-pedic brand.

Remember, buying a good mattress is like buying a good pair of shoes…at the end of a long day you never regret your decision.  Cheap shoes hurt your feet and cheap beds kill your back.  Poor sleep can lead to all kinds of long term health problems a well as just make you “grumpier”…ladies, you know what I’m talking about don’t you.  Sleep well.
