8 Simple Ways to Create Joy this Thanksgiving

8 Simple Ways to Create Joy this Thanksgiving

‘Please’ and ‘Thank You’ are magic words and should be said often to cultivate thankfulness. This Thanksgiving Season, cultivate more thankfulness in your heart and allow that joy to spread to other places of your life beyond the season. Here are some tips to help you begin to foster an ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE in your life.

Keep a Gratitude Journal. A Gratitude Journal is an easy and effective way to foster thanks-giving every day of the year. Purchase a journal or spiral bound notebook and write 5 things you are thankful for each day. Challenge yourself to think of 5 different things every single day. Review your journal every month or quarter and know how truly blessed you are.

Take a walk in nature. No matter the time of year, take time regularly to be outside, enjoying the sunshine and critters of the season. Spending time outdoors is easy in the warmer months, but the cooler months offer great benefit too. Bundle up on a cold day and take a brisk walk. The sun offers much need Vitamin D this time of year, and the quietness of the cooler seasons help you to turn into that still, deep place within.

Enjoy your breath. When is the last time you took a full deep breath? What about five or ten deep breaths? Close your eyes, inhale deeply into your belly. Count the length of your breath, then let it go as slowly as you invited it in. Just the act of consciously breathing offers depths of gratitude for being alive.

Watch your children do what they love. As a mom or dad, there is no greater joy than watching your child do what they love. Perhaps you have a teenager who excels in sports. Maybe your toddler is discovering music for the first time. Whatever it is, be in those moments fully. Watch with a curious eye. And if you aren’t a parent; a niece, nephew or friend’s child will work just fine! Children help us to see things differently.

Help others who are less fortunate. Take a look around you. Wherever you are, it’s likely there are many less fortunate right in your neighborhood. Ask yourself how you can be of service and do it! Give thanks for all you have and share your blessings with others regularly. Give to a local charity or give someone the gift of your time.

Eat mindfully. How often have you sat down to lunch or dinner and paid no attention to the process of eating? The next time you eat, savor it. Fully taste the flavors of your food and slow down your rate of chewing. Chew your food twice as much as you normally would to help your digestion process. This is a simple act of living in the moment.

Plan a date with a family member or friend you haven’t seen in a while. Call Aunt Betsy, Uncle Charlie or that long lost friend from college and make a date. Chance are pretty good that the person on the receiving end will be surprised and thrilled, and both of you will have a great time. You may just prompt him or her to do the same with someone else. Life is about the moments. Cherish them. Don’t let them pass you by.

Spend some time in solitude. This is great advice for everyone – and especially for those who are over-scheduled. Take some time for yourself. Whether it’s an hour or a day, spending time alone helps you get in touch with your inner self – that quiet introspective self that’s tuned in to his/her higher power. Do this regularly and watch your life be transformed.

From our family to yours, Connell’s wishes you a Happy Thanksgiving and blessed holiday season!

How To Creatively Hang Pictures

Hanging pictures is an art. If you’ve ever done it yourself, you know that’s a true statement.  So how is it that your neighbors have great collections of family photos neatly arranged on the wall? How did they do it?

With a little planning and patience, hanging pictures can be done easily. Whether your goal is to hang a single dramatic serigraph or a collection of black and white sketches, by following a few steps you can make your art or photos look fabulous.

image

1)  Select your collage of photos or artwork according to a theme or some type of similarity. The art in the collection should include related subject matter or color. It’s O.K. for the shapes and sizes of the frames to vary.

2)  Pick an odd number of your favorite pieces. An odd number will have greater visual interest and greater flexibility. To create a uniform look, choose frames that are similar in style or finish. With photos, use mats that are the same width and color.

3)  Create templates of the pictures. Lay the pictures on brown craft paper on the floor making sure the grouping will fit within the available wall space. Trace around the frames and cut out templates. Label the templates for identification and mark the location of the hanging wire or tabs.

4)  Attach the templates to the wall with reusable adhesive or poster tape. Be careful not to use masking tape because it will leave residue on the wall. Use the template and a pencil to mark on the wall where picture hangers should go.

5) Create balance within the grouping. Select a single favorite piece as the center of the collection, grouping the other pieces around it and keeping a consistent distance between each one. It’s fine to hang pictures in a straight line if you have two or three matching pieces which will only coordinate when hung side by side.

6) Hang your artwork at eye level. The biggest mistake made when pictures are hung is that they’re placed too high on the wall.

Hanging art creatively will add warmth to a room and create visual interest. Visit either of Connell’s Furniture and Mattresses two showrooms in Mt. Vernon or Newark, and one of our talented representative will help you find just the right wall décor to hang in your home.

Back To School Tips and Tricks

Category:

The kids are back in school. Fall sports are in full swing. Is your house ready for all of the hustle and bustle that Fall brings? Let Connell’s help. Here we’ll give you tips and tricks to get your home both school and fall-sports-season ready so you can tackle every day in style and tact. Take heed.

Start each day peacefully. Give yourself some morning time peace by designating a spot in your home just for you, mom (and/or dad). This quiet corner is the perfect place for you to rise, enjoy your morning cup of coffee or tea and spend some time reading, writing and/or in reflection. Tell the kids this quiet spot is off limits until a certain time, and if clutter is left by them, take action to reclaim your little haven. In addition to your “you spot,” organize an area for the kid’s stuff and make them get into the regular habit of placing their school belongings in only that particular spot to make departure hassle free.

Nom nom nom. Set up a “lunch station” in your kitchen. Keep all items that will go in, or be used for lunches in one central area. Anything that gets used regularly will be left out or within easy reach to make lunch-making a breeze.

Make studying a breeze. Homework’s got nothing on you – or your kids. Set up a book nook or study station in one centralized but quiet area of your home. If your kitchen is large enough, set up a desk and small shelving so the kids have an accessible area to work while you are making dinner. Provide them with plenty of light, and fresh air if possible. Add a dry erase or corkboard to keep you and them organized.

Volleyball, Football, Cross Country. Oh My! The Fall sports season is a busy one if you have one child, let alone two, three or a half dozen. Kids are busy from sun up to sun down. The bus leaves in the 6 a.m. hour and they don’t get home until mid afternoon. Add sports to the equation and there is literally only about an hour or two per night of free time. Keep their sports gear, equipment and uniforms organized and in the same location each and every day. Hang uniforms in the same spot so they know where to find them without asking. Keep sports equipment in one spot as well. Charge your kids with the task of taking care of and organizing these items to teach them responsibility.

Chill time is a must. With all of the running around, make down time a regular planned activity at home as well. Create a “lounging zone” in the Family Room or basement made just for family time, as well as a fun spot for the kids and their friends to hang. Add a sectional, end tables, bean bag chairs and futons for uber comfortability. A flat screen television and surround sound completes the ensemble and makes it an area kids are drawn to.

As always, Connell’s has you covered. Stop in to one of our two convenient locations in Mt. Vernon and Newark for beautiful home furnishings at exceptional prices, all backed by our exclusive No Oops Guarantee. Happy Back-To-School time to you!

Create Style with Texture and Color

Category:

Create MOOD, FEEL and STYLE by using texture in the home! Turn boring into WOW!

We get so used to our homes; it is the place we spend the majority of our time, after all. Give your home an overhaul this fall or just spice things up a bit. Connell’s has all sorts of ideas to help you turn your home into a place that inspires!

Start with color and build. Cover large spaces with bold, beautiful color; and use soft, delicate colors in smaller rooms so as not to overpower. Play with pattern, inter-mixing bold and dainty. Build your “theme” by including other patterns with different shapes and sizes. Keep colors and varying scale in mind to keep it cohesive. Make a statement with a large floral pattern on a few pillows, small checks and solids on a few more and vertical stripes for your draperies, which will also make the room seem taller.

Throw in the texture. Start with just a few and then add more as it makes sense depending on boldness of color and the size of the room. Sheen textures are perfect for formal spaces, while muted textures give a room a more casual comfortable appeal. Throw out the rules, if you so choose – it’s YOUR home, after all!

Relate similar objects, then fill with color and fabric patterns. If you want to avoid making the room too busy, keep the background color neutral and uniform. Start with only a few colors you really like and know you won’t tire of.

When thinking of pattern, consider the entire space. Doorways, floors, shape of furniture and accessories may all have patterns within them. If you’ve always had the sofa against the wall, angle it to create a triangular shape in the room. A square or rectangular table in the corner can be replaced by a circular one. When you’re ready to buy new furniture, replace your overstuffed sofa with a modern, streamlined piece with square edges.

Be BOLD! Confidently mix several patterns and watch how the room transforms into something entirely different. Allow one large-scaled pattern to dominate over one medium-scaled floral and another geometric. Get creative in your thinking and add two more smaller scaled accent patterns and textures.

The Importance of Play in Life

Category:

Don’t you love to watch children play? In altogether different worlds, children make sense of their lives through play. It’s essential, and as parents we can learn so much from our children. A playroom serves double duty in encouraging play and keeping clutter to a minimum in the home. Create the perfect space to foster growth and imagination within your kids. Children should have a place of their own, and while an entire room is ideal, it isn’t necessary. No matter the size of your home, a playroom is possible. A closet is big enough for a reading nook or computer area. Read on for ideas to create a sacred space for the young minds you love.

Consider design based on the ages and preferences of the children who will use the room. Plan for today and for tomorrow. When choosing furniture, less is more. Allow plenty of open space for play. Keep pieces simple and in neutral colors so they continue to adapt and function over the years. Limit permanent fixtures so the room can grow and adapt with your child.

Next consider the size of your home and space available. Choose colors and possible theme. A playroom is the perfect place to showcase expression and creativity. Map it out. Basements, attics and small spaces underneath the stairs are ideal choices for a child’s playroom, especially in smaller homes. Include your children in the planning if possible. Will the walls be plain or have designs? Are you artistic or do you know someone who is? If free-hand painting isn’t an option, removable art decals are another option for adding a whimsical feel to the room.

Creativity stations allow for various functions. If a whole room is not available due to space, identify a few separate areas within your home. A reading corner allows for quiet introspection, while an art area encourages creativity. Choose furniture that suits each station. Chairs, benches, shelves and lighting are essentials in the reading nook, while a large flat surface provides the space needed in an art area.

Storage is essential in all play areas to keep the space organized. Choose options easiest for kids to get in and out of effortlessly. There are numerous designs available and many can double as shelves and writing surfaces. Be creative and allow your children to do the same when determining storage solutions.

Nature Inspired Design

Do you love the outdoors and wish you could bring more of it inside? You can with nature inspired design. It isn’t that hard to bring the outdoors in. Take a look around the next time you go for a walk or hike and get inspired. For some ideas to get your brain moving, read on.

Everybody loves fresh flowers. From roses to hyacinth to tulips to daisies, the colors span the rainbow and beyond. Pick or purchase bouquets and display them proudly on your dining room table, in the entryway, even in the bathroom. Everybody loves fresh flowers.

Think outside the box? No, just think outside. Don’t stop at flowers. Choose twigs and flowering tree branches to display as centerpieces as well. These add texture and dimension to simple fresh cut flowers. They are even beautiful as stand alone items in a vase.

Edible decor is fun, practical and serves multiple purposes. Buy fruits and vegetables of varying shapes, colors, sizes and smells to display within a decorative centerpiece or bowl. Use as decoration, eat when hungry and replace when gone.

Accessorize simply and beautifully. Buy frames or prints with flowers, fields, animals and outdoor scenes. The frames themselves might have pressed flowers within them, or you might choose a simple wood frame with a beautiful print that includes an outdoor display.

Go natural and get comfy with pillows and blankets. Choose prints with flowers, leaves, rocks, seashells and more. These are simple, effective and inexpensive ways to bring the nature inspired design theme home.

Be bold. Purchase a sofa, loveseat or chair that includes a nature scene or design. Retro floral patterns are another option versus an actual outdoor scene and it gives the room an updated chic appeal. Alternatively, stick with a completely neutral color and accessorize to the hilt.

Your nose knows. Add fresh flower potpourri, scented candles, reeds and more to layer in the olfactory senses.

Love walking barefoot? Find a natural textured rug or two to complete your nature inspired design. You’ve got visual, olfactory and tactile senses covered at once.

Don’t overdo it. Some elements in the room must be neutral. Easy peasy. Include colors with similar hues as those natural elements and your job is done.

Stop in today to one of the two Connell’s locations for additional ideas and inspiration. Find us on Facebook for tips, tricks and sweepstakes. As always, count on exceptional service, great value and the best home furnishings around.

Mother’s Day is Coming!

Category:

Mother’s Day is just over a week away. Are you ready?

Who in the world is like mom? So many roles, sometimes all at the same time! She’s a cheerleader, nurturer, tutor, biggest fan, disciplinarian, taxi driver, nurse and more. And have you noticed she receives very little recognition for all she does? Remember mom this Mother’s Day, on Sunday May 13th. As always, we’ve got some tricks up our sleeve to get you started.

Quality time is THE BEST gift of all. More than any gift in the world, the gift your mom will love the most is the gift of time. Go to church with her, take her to lunch, go on a family walk or hike, catch a movie. Do what comes naturally for your family; just make the time to do it.

Do you have a working mom? Give her a day of rest. Buy her a gift certificate for a massage, pedicure, manicure, or even an entire day at the spa. All moms spend so much time caring for others, a gift of self nurturing would be blissful.

Is mom the a cooking diva? Give her a gift she’ll use, and think of you each time she does! With so many kitchen gadgets on the market, find something that will make her time in the kitchen easier and remind her of you each time she gets it out – choppers, mixing bowls, grinders, a coffee press – the options are limitless and in every price range!

A simple gift is always nice; flowers, chocolate, jewelry, frames, art, coffee, tea bags, soaps, candles, a heartwarming card. It’s the little things that matter most. Depending on taste, all moms would love at least one of those items. Go bigger and place several items in a beautiful basket that can be used for other things around the house.

Is sentimental more your thing? Or perhaps it’s more mom’s thing? Really get her with this one. Choose a handmade gift that’s from the heart. Find a multi-window photo frame. Fill it with family photos old and new, along with cards and notes from years past. (You may need dad’s help with this one.) Mom now owns a treasured keepsake unique to your family.

Come to Connell’s for other great ideas. We have thousands of items for every room, style and occasion. Find furniture, mattresses and accessories for any taste and budget. Mom will be overwhelmed with the time you spent finding that “just right” gift for her!

Really WOW her this Mother’s Day! Go in with dad to buy her the new sofa, loveseat, office chair or credenza she’s been eying! Or better yet, surprise them both with a brand new flat panel HDTV!

Stop in to one of the two Connell’s locations in Mt. Vernon and Newark today. Share your ideas – and this post on Facebook! Show mom you care this Mother’s Day and let us know her reaction!
