How to Find Your Style

You’ve made the big decision to redecorate and really want to get it right. That’s the good news. You’ve looked at all the glossy interior design magazines and love everything.  That’s the bad news. All the pages in the magazine look so great; you’re not sure which style is your favorite.

How can you redecorate if you don’t know your style? Here are a few questions to ask yourself to help you know which direction to go.

  1. Which room in your home is your favorite? Is it the den because it has vintage, rich fabrics?  Do you love the kitchen because it’s filled with casual wicker and sunlight?  Is it the bathroom because of its soft colors and romantic ruffles? It’s a sure bet your favorite room has elements of your style.
  2. When you go out for dinner on your anniversary or birthday, which eatery do your choose? Do you opt for the elegant, formal continental restaurant?  Is the western steak house your first choice?  Are you enticed by the colors of the Mediterranean bistro? Chances are the décor makes you feel comfortable and relaxed.
  3. What type of art do you have on your walls? Art is a wholly personal purchase and a strong indicator of your style. Its color and form capture attention and emotion. Is there an abstract painting or poster hanging in your living room? Decorating a Long, Narrow Room

We probably all remember the excitement we felt when we moved into our first apartment.  Some of us may even remember a similar feeling when, as empty nesters, we downsized to a smaller residence.  Both homes very likely had one feature in common – a long, narrow living area.

There’s no doubt decorating a single, elongated space is challenging. The larger, open spaces make arranging furniture tricky. Below are a few secrets to conquering these narrow spaces and providing chat-friendly areas within the room.

  • Create individual focal points within the room to draw visual attention.

Place an entertainment center at one end of the room or in a corner.  Hang a dramatic piece of art with an accent light above it. Brighten a fireplace with sconces, buffet lamps or tall candleholders.

  • Design separate intimate conversation areas.

Segment furniture in groupings adjacent to the focal points. Arrange club chairs or a chaise at angles in front of the entertainment center. Place a plush sofa perpendicular to the fireplace with twin accent chairs opposite the sofa.  Create a reading nook by arranging bookcases at right angles within a corner and adding a cozy recliner and lamp.

  • Anchor each zone with an area rug.

A rug will add personality and create visual separation from other sections of the room.  Select a rug which coordinates in style and color with the furnishings in each conversation area. To make the area look wider, place the rug at an angle.

  • Trick the eye into believing the room is shorter

Paint each end of the room a darker shade.  This trick will visually remove length from the room. Go a step further and paint the ceiling a light white.  A very light ceiling will draw the eye upwards instead of forwards down the room.

Winter White

White is the new black. Wait, what? White is the new black – it’s IN, inviting, charming. And with it you can do so much!

During the 1990s and early 2000′s, bright, bold colors were “the new black”, meaning it was the in, hip, cool way to decorate. Everyone was painting at least one room mustard seed yellow, passion-on-purpose red or turquoise sea turtle. And while these trends certainly are not out, white is emerging as a popular color choice. Plus, when choosing bright white, antique white, beige, sand or another light, almost color-less hue, you can be uber-creative with your decorating choices because you aren’t competing with other colors. Read on for ideas to brighten up just one of your rooms this winter – to a winter white.

Bring in elements of nature to soften a mostly white room. If re-doing a dining room, arrange a large natural wood table in the center of the room. Place a glass centerpiece in the middle filled with fresh flowers or arrange sticks in an assortment of sizes for a beautiful and inexpensive twist. White candles, tealights or votives are beautiful for winter meals by candlelight. Want a less dramatic and more playful look? Choose a large white table with a gorgeous wooden bowl in the center filled with colorful fruits like oranges, lemons and limes. Simple. Elegant. Beautiful. And fun.

 

Make the color count. Display a passion. Redo the floor in a fun, unique, textural pattern. Choose other colors wisely. Do you love flowers? Wallpaper just one wall in a gorgeous floral print. Choose one accent piece in a bright color that matches one of the flowers. A mango colored table or chest brings playfulness and lightness to a white room. Or put pops of color throughout like the faux grass does in the photo above. Use wood, silver and more white in accessories such as boxes, vases, poufs, tabletops and frames.

 

Make a focal point. Choose one wall and buy an extremely large print, photo or mirror to fill the wall, creating a focal point for the room. Paint a wall or two a different color and let all of the other white pieces pull the room together. Decorate simply, and for accents choose colors that match the print and don’t overpower the room or the focal point.

 

Let nature do the work. Have a room with lots of windows? Create a white out inside and allow the outdoors to create the feel of the room. Even if the room doesn’t have large windows, an all white room can also feel serene in a bedroom. Instead of decorating with color, paint the walls white, purchase a large white poster bed, white dressers and nightstands, and a white – or off white setee. This looks makes a statement with beautiful hard wood floors and a sheepskin rug!

How to Hang Pictures Creatively

Hanging pictures is an art. If you’ve ever done it yourself, you know that’s a true statement. So how is it that your neighbors have great collections of family photos neatly arranged on the wall? How did they do it?

With a little planning and patience, hanging pictures can be done easily. Whether your goal is to hang a single dramatic serigraph or a collection of black and white sketches, by following a few steps you can make your art or photos look fabulous.

1)  Select your collage of photos or artwork according to a theme or some type of similarity. The art in the collection should include related subject matter or color. It’s O.K. for the shapes and sizes of the frames to vary.

2)  Pick an odd number of your favorite pieces. An odd number will have greater visual interest and greater flexibility. To create a uniform look, choose frames that are similar in style or finish. With photos, use mats that are the same width and color.

3)  Create templates of the pictures. Lay the pictures on brown craft paper on the floor making sure the grouping will fit within the available wall space.  Trace around the frames and cut out templates. Label the templates for identification and mark the location of the hanging wire or tabs.

4)  Attach the templates to the wall with reusable adhesive or poster tape. Be careful not to use masking tape because it will leave residue on the wall. Use the template and a pencil to mark on the wall where picture hangers should go.

5) Create balance within the grouping. Select a single favorite piece as the center of the collection, grouping the other pieces around it and keeping a consistent distance between each one.  It’s fine to hang pictures in a straight line if you have two or three matching pieces which will only coordinate when hung side by side.

6) Hang your artwork at eye level. The biggest mistake made when pictures are hung is that they’re placed too high on the wall.

New Year’s Resolutions for the Home

It’s hard to believe it’s almost 2012. Where did the time go? Isn’t that the question we ask ourselves every year as we grow older? It really is hard to believe how time flies! Nonetheless, it will be 2012 in just a few short days. Have you started making your New Year’s Resolutions? Did you think about your home when doing so?

Your home is your castle, your haven, your safe place to rest. Shouldn’t you nurture and take care of it in the same way you take care of yourself and your loved ones? Consider making at least one resolution for your home and take some time to nurture your relationship to your home. It keeps you warm and dry, doesn’t laugh when you cry and likely takes lots of abuse with all of the time you and your family spend there. Here are a few ideas to get you thinking about your own New Year’s Resolutions for you home!

ALL YEAR:

Commit to a room makeover each quarter. Room makeovers don’t have to be huge to be fabulous. Rearrange furniture. Switch pillows and wall hangings out from one room to another. Collect your children’s artwork and buy frames to proudly display them. Want to go bigger? Repaint just one wall. Buy one new piece of furniture. Accessorize in a way you never thought you would. Bigger yet? Go for it! Redo an entire room in 2012. Spread it out over the year if necessary.

ALL YEAR/SPRING:

Do you hate to clean? Make it a ritual and include the whole family. Get the kids involved and offer to give them commission for a job well done. Make your own homemade cleaning supplies that are far less toxic than the ones you find on the shelves. There are all sorts of books and online resources that will show you how, using simple ingredients like vinegar, water, essential oils and baking soda!

Start a garden! When thinking of your home, think of your whole home – the inside and out. If you’ve never had a garden, do it this year. Start small if it seems daunting. Grow a few herbs in pots indoors to use in your favorite dishes. Grow a tomato plant or two in different varieties – think big, large and juicy, as well as small cherry tomatoes for yummy salads in the summer. Potatoes are easy, as are peppers in all varieties and broccoli.

SUMMER:

Host a dinner party or fun barbeque. This is your year! Since you’ve committed to spending some time and energy on your home, host a gathering. Feature your garden beauties and simple fare. Decorate for the season and enjoy your guests. Try it once and you’ll be hooked – friends and food always equals good times!

Bring nature inside whenever possible. Cut a few flowers from the garden or purchase a bouquet from the store to brighten up your home on a regular basis. Try out your green thumb on a new plant or two. Flowers and plants are life and they beautify your home like nothing else.

FALL/WINTER:

Take stock of your belongings. Give what you can away to others who need and will use it. Buy something new for your home. The Health Benefits of Sleep

Sleep … those peaceful lovely zzzzzzs! It’s bliss, until the fateful night you toss and turn, lay prone with eyes wide open trying not to disturb your partner.

The Countdown is ON

The holidays are almost upon us!  Winter is less than a month a way. Thanksgiving zoomed past and Christmas will be here before we know it.

Whoa! Wait a minute!

Let’s not JINGLE those BELLS or DECK those HALLS quite yet.

Most of us need to take the time to slow down in our lives and the holidays are no exception. In fact, we can use the holidays as an exercise in being present . . . to the spirit of the season, to our family, friends and loved ones; to our senses, to ALL the holiday has to offer.

Since it’s likely that Thanksgiving passed you by without a thought, here are some great ideas to bring both presence and preparedness into focus as you enter *cue music* The Most Wonderful Time of the Year!

Start a list!

With so much to do beyond your normal busy life, sit down one Saturday or Sunday afternoon and write down all of the items you’d like to accomplish as the holidays approach. Include things like Christmas shopping, card sending, carolling, reading holiday books with the kids, holiday decorating, cake and cookie making, wrapping gifts, baking dinner items, party planning and attending. Write it all down.

Make a plan.

Get out that planner and schedule time to do those things that must be done in one color. Use another color to schedule items that you want to do and another for “I’d really like to accomplish  _______________ (fill in the blank) time permitting.”

Organize your home with productivity in mind.

Set up a gift wrapping area in a spare bedroom, basement, closet or attic. Instead of taking hours to wrap gifts, do a little bit at a time in this organized area. Pull all of your Christmas decoration and baking items into individual spaces for easy reach and use when you are ready.

Make gifts instead of buying them.

This is a great way to invite presence into the holidays by spending time with the kids. Go online and look for “how to” and DIY projects that are appropriate for children (at whatever age they may be).  Venture out to a craft store to purchase the items; then go home, play some Christmas music, sip some egg nog, and create away! You’ll have fun, the kids will have a blast and the gift recipient will be thankful for the time you spent in creating a one-of-a-kind gift for them.

Donate your time and/or money to a local charity or faith community event.

Teach the kids the spirit of Christmas by giving back to others who need it most. Cook, donate and serve a meal at a homeless shelter. Buy and wrap presents for children who wouldn’t have gifts otherwise. Donate gently used items to charities and thrift stores. There are a million charities and events out there just waiting for people like you to help.

Create Style with Texture and Color

Create MOOD, FEEL and STYLE by using texture in the home! Turn boring into WOW!

We get so used to our homes; it is the place we spend the majority of our time, after all. Give your home an overhaul this fall or just spice things up a bit. Connell’s has all sorts of ideas to help you turn your home into a place that inspires!

Start with color and build. Cover large spaces with bold, beautiful color; and use soft, delicate colors in smaller rooms so as not to overpower. Play with pattern, inter-mixing bold and dainty. Build your “theme” by including other patterns with different shapes and sizes. Keep colors and varying scale in mind to keep it cohesive. Make a statement with a large floral pattern on a few pillows, small checks and solids on a few more and vertical stripes for your draperies, which will also make the room seem taller.

Throw in the texture. Start with just a few and then add more as it makes sense depending on boldness of color and the size of the room. Sheen textures are perfect for formal spaces, while muted textures give a room a more casual comfortable appeal. Throw out the rules, if you so choose – it’s YOUR home, after all!

Relate similar objects, then fill with color and fabric patterns. If you want to avoid making the room too busy, keep the background color neutral and uniform. Start with only a few colors you really like and know you won’t tire of.

When thinking of pattern, consider the entire space. Doorways, floors, shape of furniture and accessories may all have patterns within them. If you’ve always had the sofa against the wall, angle it to create a triangular shape in the room. A square or rectangular table in the corner can be replaced by a circular one. When you’re ready to buy new furniture, replace your overstuffed sofa with a modern, streamlined piece with square edges.

Be BOLD! Confidently mix several patterns and watch how the room transforms into something entirely different. Allow one large-scaled pattern to dominate over one medium-scaled floral and another geometric. Get creative in your thinking and add two more smaller scaled accent patterns and textures.
