Mother’s Day Is This Sunday

Who loves ya baby? Mom does!

When you can count on no one else, it seems mom is always there. She nursed and cared for you as a baby, kept you from harm as a toddler, put you in line as an adolescent, provided a shoulder in your teenage years, and is still your biggest fan as a young adult or adult. No matter what your age, you know mom has always got your back.  Show mom how much you appreciate her this Mother’s Day with these gift and planning ideas.

Small tokens of appreciation. Mom probably doesn’t want or need much, so the small things really matter. If you no longer live at home, go visit and take flowers. Buy her a Starbucks gift card that will keep on giving through the year. If she loves to read, pick up the latest bestseller. Hanging flower baskets are selling everywhere these days — wouldn’t one look great on her front porch?

Quality time is the best gift ever. Go to church with mom and then take her out to lunch, brunch or coffee. Plan a small family gathering on Mother’s Day. Help her plant the garden, organize a neglected area of the home, or just hang out.

Let mom be a queen for a day. Buy her a massage, manicure, pedicure and/or facial. Treat she and dad to a night out on the town.

Find that just right gift for her castle. Buy her that new sofa – loveseat combo or sectional she’s been wanting for a while now. What about a new television or surround sound stereo? Maybe the dining room is in need of an upgrade. If you have it within your means, give back to mom. She deserves it for all she has done for you!

What Are You Waiting For? Get Planting!

Happy almost-the-last-day-of-May, folks. We’re switching gears today because of the lovely weather in Ohio and our yearning for home grown veggies from the garden. Yes, yes, we’re Connell’s – a home furnishings store, but we know there’s a lot more than home furnishings that makes a home!

If you haven’t ever had a garden, there is no better time than the present to start. Don’t overwhelm yourself. Start small, talk to others, gauge your success this year and then grow from there. And no worries if you live in an urban area – plenty of people are gardening in small spaces these days. We’ve gathered some tips and tricks to help you get started.

Start with some raised beds. If you can imagine it, you can do it.

Why not try an herb garden on a privacy fence?

Separate and label your plant varieties so you won’t forget.

Old coffee cans provide enough depth for many plants and create an interesting appeal in your backyard.

Simple planters on your deck is a great way to start.

If you get started now, you should have many varieties harvested by mid summer. Plant tomatoes, onions and peppers and make some salsa. Jalapeños make appetizing poppers. Stuffed peppers, cabbage rolls and sweet corn on the cob all await your taste buds. Treat them right, knowing exactly where your food came from! Here’s a short video we found to help you start from seed, if you so desire. (It might be best to wait until next year because of the timing.)
