New Year’s Resolutions For Your Home

Each year, most of spend time dreaming about the year ahead. Often that dreaming takes the shape of cultivating New Years Resolutions, Intentions and/or Goals. When was the last time you set a goal for your entire household? Maybe 2013 should be that year! Sit in quiet reflection, noticing the things your home really needs and allow that to direct your efforts. Or, take a few clues from us. Here are FIVE New Year’s Resolutions you can adopt for your own home.

Spend time with family. That’s right. Look around your home and determine if there are any do-it-yourself projects that would be fun to tackle as a family. With home improvement stores everywhere, there are so many things you can do today that you might have had to hire a professional to do in the past. These DIY projects can be as simple as an interesting paint pattern in one of your rooms, or as difficult as completely renovating an entire room or area of your home.

Get rid of stuff. Nothing says “Happy New Year” like the act of de-cluttering. Over time we accumulate so much stuff and in the daily grind we often don’t have the time to go through the stuff until it’s piled up to a mountainous fright. Clean out the garage, basement, or attic. Perhaps the home office has so much paper it’s a fire hazard. Maybe your kids are grown and you still have Disney DVDs lying around. When de-cluttering, think of others. Can you donate it to charity or give it to a friend who would enjoy it?

Cut energy usage in 2013. There are so many ways you can cut your energy usage. Turn the heat down when you are not home. Change your light bulbs to CFL bulbs. Buy a low-flow shower head. Turn off power strips when not in use. Line dry your clothes and try composting for a change.

Purify the air. Get an air purifying system that cleans the air and leaves you feeling fresh and rejuvenated. Keep your HVAC system up to par by changing your filters regularly. In fireplaces, burn real wood instead of the pressed wood products you’ll find in stores. And our favorite way to purify the air? Get more houseplants. They are natural air purifiers and they beautify your home like nothing else.

Treat yourself for your hard work. Come to one of the two Connell’s locations in Mount Vernon or Newark, and treat yourself and your home to something special. Perhaps it’s time you get a new mattress so you can sleep more soundly and be able to tackle all of your other goals and intentions for 2013. Maybe a new dining room is in order, or that beautiful sofa, love or sectional is just waiting for a new space within your home. Whatever is your hearts desire, make 2013 the year of your home!

Fun! Fantastic! Fireplaces!

The colder weather has changed our habits and we’re snuggling indoors; reading, watching television, listening to music, or cooking up something delicious in the kitchen. Nothing says winter warmth like the beauty of a crackling fire and the sound of family gathered around the hearth. Take some tips from Connell’s Furniture and Mattresses as we help you recover that fireplace into the focal point it was meant to be.

A corner fireplace adds dimension. Perhaps your home didn’t come with a fireplace and you’d like to add one. Never fear, a corner fireplace is fun, quirky, and a beautiful addition to any room. With so many varieties to choose from, adding a fireplace will give your room depth, dimension and warmth. Arrange furniture in such a way that the fireplace becomes the focal point, but be sure to leave as much floor space as possible. Experiment, move and settle into your new beautiful addition.

Curvy lines hold extra appeal. If your fireplace is in need of repair, change the shape of the arch from rectangular to an interesting arch that adds a softness to the room. Use stone or beautiful brick and spread the elements throughout the room to tie it together. Another doorway might match, or a section of the floor might be the best bet.

Tile adds visual vintage appeal to a fireplace or mantle. Choosing a single color of tile, or a mix and match assortment creates a focal point sure to please any eye. Find colors you enjoy that will be easily tied into other pieces in the room. Leave it ultra simple, or add  vintage finds to the fireplace for a cozier feel.

Dress your fireplace up with a screen. Just the simple addition of a screen will add extravagance or elegance to the room. Choose from cast iron with straight lines for a more modern look, or choose a screen with scrolling elements to give the room a soft, cozy feel.

Bookshelves dress up an otherwise bland fireplace. Are you handy, or do you have a few in your household who are? Create built in bookshelves right next to your fireplace for a grand statement, as well as a ready made reading area.

Draw attention to your fireplace with the addition of another focal point. If you fireplace gets lost amid all of the other design elements, add a large mirror or piece of beautiful artwork to the mantle, drawing attention front and center. Use other smaller accents to keep attention where it belongs.

As always, stop into one of the two Connell’s locations in Mount Vernon or Newark today for beautiful home furnishings, plus more ideas to make your house a home. As always, expect exceptional customer service and savings beyond compare.

For The Home. Accessorizing your home for Valentine’s Day is easy, inexpensive and fun. Display a simple flower arangement with white, pink and red roses or carnations in a basic white vase. Create a Valentine’s Day wreath with simple silk roses. Purchase clear glass votives and adorn with red and white candles throughout your home.

Sweet Treats! Throw a small after school party for friends, family and the neighborhood kids complete with sweets
that are sure to please any palette. Add a dessert tower to the kitchen table, full of creatively decorated cupcakes. Set up a cookie decorating station with cookies in the shapes of hearts, homes, cupids and more. Bake a red velvet cake, add white icing and top with strawberries or cherries. Add wholesome foods to the menu, including red apples, strawberries and raspberries. Don’t forget the chocolate! A chocolate fountain perhaps?

DIY Projects.  Create hand crafted memory boards by wrapping a simple cork board in beautiful red, pink and/or white material. Include lots of textures and patterns including stripes, polka dots, hearts, felt and fur. Try your hand at modern Valentine’s Day artwork using your favorite photos and stickers or cut outs from the craft store. Frame and decorate your favorite love quote.

Love Us Too! Go all out and buy that beautiful cherry red sofa you’ve had your eye on since last Valentine’s Day. Add soft, whimsical pillows, throws and table tops to complete your design.
