Create Style with Texture and Color

Category:

Create MOOD, FEEL and STYLE by using texture in the home! Turn boring into WOW!

We get so used to our homes; it is the place we spend the majority of our time, after all. Give your home an overhaul this fall or just spice things up a bit. Connell’s has all sorts of ideas to help you turn your home into a place that inspires!

Start with color and build. Cover large spaces with bold, beautiful color; and use soft, delicate colors in smaller rooms so as not to overpower. Play with pattern, inter-mixing bold and dainty. Build your “theme” by including other patterns with different shapes and sizes. Keep colors and varying scale in mind to keep it cohesive. Make a statement with a large floral pattern on a few pillows, small checks and solids on a few more and vertical stripes for your draperies, which will also make the room seem taller.

Throw in the texture. Start with just a few and then add more as it makes sense depending on boldness of color and the size of the room. Sheen textures are perfect for formal spaces, while muted textures give a room a more casual comfortable appeal. Throw out the rules, if you so choose – it’s YOUR home, after all!

Relate similar objects, then fill with color and fabric patterns. If you want to avoid making the room too busy, keep the background color neutral and uniform. Start with only a few colors you really like and know you won’t tire of.

When thinking of pattern, consider the entire space. Doorways, floors, shape of furniture and accessories may all have patterns within them. If you’ve always had the sofa against the wall, angle it to create a triangular shape in the room. A square or rectangular table in the corner can be replaced by a circular one. When you’re ready to buy new furniture, replace your overstuffed sofa with a modern, streamlined piece with square edges.

Be BOLD! Confidently mix several patterns and watch how the room transforms into something entirely different. Allow one large-scaled pattern to dominate over one medium-scaled floral and another geometric. Get creative in your thinking and add two more smaller scaled accent patterns and textures.

Choosing the Right Mattress

Category:

Have you put enough time and research into choosing the proper mattress? You should! Nearly one-third of our lives is spent sleeping; we invest more time into sleep than any other activity. Because of this, it’s vital to choose the right mattress with the proper support, firmness and size so you can get the sleep you need to live a healthier and more productive life.

Mattress Support and Firmness

The right mattress shouldn’t be too hard or too soft. A soft mattress can potentially provide poor support, resulting in muscle stiffness, and back and neck pain. Look for valleys or bumps on your mattress as a tell-tale sign that’s it’s too soft – consider purchasing a new, more supportive mattress when you find these indicators.

Moreover, a mattress that is too hard can exert too much force on pressure points such as the back, neck, shoulders and hips, which can contort the spine and lead to further sleep disturbances. The perfect mattress should mold to your body while providing gentle support and firmness.

Size

When it comes to mattresses, bigger is better. Consider this, the average person moves around generally 30 times each night. Combine this movement with a partner and sleeping space can become cramped or uncomfortable. Therefore, you may want to consider purchasing a larger mattress so you and your partner can sleep comfortably. Plus, many mattresses are designed to reduce tossing and turning, such as the Tempur-Pedic® Tempur-Cloud Luxe, and to also deflect your partner’s movements so you get the sleep you deserve.

Visit Connell’s Furniture & Mattresses in Mt. Vernon and Newark for the area’s largest selection of comfortable mattresses in every size designed to provide the proper support and firmness so you can get the sleep you deserve. Our sleep specialists will take the time to help you choose the perfect mattress for your bedroom and budget that provides the comfort you need for a great night’s sleep.

A Healthy Lifestyle Starts with A Great Night’s Sleep

Category:

Extensive research shows a quality night’s sleep affects our physical health, emotional well-being and longevity. Conversely, a poor night’s sleep leads to irritability, heart disease, obesity and diabetes. The importance of a good night’s sleep can’t be underestimated, and it’s fairly simple to achieve by following the advice below.

A great night’s sleep starts with two things:

  1. The proper amount of sleep
  2. A comfortable mattress with the proper support

The Proper Amount of Sleep

Individuals who get the correct amount of sleep each night tend to live longer, healthier and happier lives. Sleep repairs the body and produces protein molecules that are vital in fighting infection, pollutants and infectious bacteria. Plus it helps us maintain the proper weight, improves memory and lessens the chance of mood disorders. Although the proper amount varies from person to person, the sleep requirements by age are a good indicator of how much sleep you need each night.

  • Babies (Ages 0 – 2 months): 12 – 18 hours
  • Infants (Ages 3 – 12 months): 14 – 15 hours
  • Toddlers (Ages 1 – 3 years): 12 – 14 hours
  • Young Children (Ages 3 – 5 years): 11 – 13 hours
  • School-Aged Children (Ages 5 – 10 years): 10  – 11 hours
  • Teenagers (11 – 17 years): 8 – 9 hours
  • Adults: 7 – 9 hours

Choosing the Right Mattress

Since every person’s body is different, it’s important to take the time to find a mattress that is perfect for you. Visit Connell’s in Mt. Vernon and Newark and we’ll help you find the proper mattress for your back, bedroom and budget. Connell’s Furniture & Mattresses specializes in a variety of sleep solutions, including Simmons Beautyrest, Tempur-Pedic and the cool Serta iComfort mattress!

If you wake up with a sore back or have trouble getting to sleep, your mattress may be saggy. Although a firm mattress may be the solution, it may not be perfect for you. A plush mattress may also provide the support needed to to counter a saggy mattress. But it’s always necessary to test out a new mattress before you buy it.

Take the time to lay down on it and don’t rush into a decision. Try out several different types and compare the comfort levels. And be sure to wear comfortable clothes so you’re relaxed and can enjoy your experience choosing a comfortable mattress.
